I am currently working on Sue Garman's Friends of Baltimore and was really worried about how I was going to hand quilt through all of the layers. In some places there are 5 and 6 layers and the thought of quilting through that made me want to have it machine quilted...which would be just fine but I really wanted to hand quilt this one. So I see that from your wonderful examples of layered applique it is really and truly ok to stitch around the elements and not through all those darn layers! Can't tell you how truly liberated I feel right now!! I love your work. Your are very inspiring!!
Kerry
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3069484008002726892.post-88647662274067588412014-01-22T16:45:46.542-08:002014-01-22T16:45:46.542-08:00Thank you so much, Ulla! Your photos are so great, especially because you have included detail close ups of the hand work these talented women have done. I can't tell you how much I have enjoyed looking and looking again at them! Also your piece at the end is inspirational, your applique is so beautifully done. I initially thought the lettering had been inked on! I was amazed when I saw the close ups, your work is exquisite! Thank you so very much for sharing, I will be linking to your blog, what a lucky accident finding your blog today. The Quilted Finish https://www.blogger.com/profile/08019109968115545061noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3069484008002726892.post-3768153223784986912013-09-06T09:39:32.051-07:002013-09-06T09:39:32.051-07:00Hello Marijke and thank you for brightening my day...Hello Marijke and thank you for brightening my day! You have me laughing out loud, too! I so very much appreciate your lovely comments. I must warn you, however, not to worry about missing one of my posts...they are dreadfully sporadic as you can see by my blog history :/ I have the best intentions but find there are never enough hours in the day for me! I'm off to teach next week in Nebraska at Baltimore on the Prairie (Applique Conference). Upon my return, I plan to dive into a pile of my new designs which are begging to be stitched and, hopefully, begin my own LE quilt. It's so nice for me to know you're interested and that you'll be waiting in the wings for any future posts. Thank you! As for combining hand and machine techniques, I say "Beauty is in the eyes of the maker". You have no one else to please but yourself. Our needle art is a personal expression with our unique individual aesthetic sense coming heavily into play. There really are no quilt police. Today, anything goes. There are no strict rules which must be adhered to...thank goodness! You're right about handwork being very time consuming, but it's oh-so-relaxing and most valued. However, the relatively instant gratification offered by machine techniques make it really appealing, too, not to mention the wonderfully creative special effects you can achieve.

I totally understand why you're burning to move past your first applique quilt. If your first quilt is a BAQ, however, then it very well may take you 10 years! But, you'll learn best by doing...so jump in! And, there's nothing saying you can't do other projects in between or concurrently (like the majority of other applique quilters who have a pile of yet to be finished heirlooms in the making). I have one that's so old it's got whiskers. And, my work today is so much improved over some of my earlier stitching, but I'm not removing the old parts or fixing things I'm no longer happy with. I just smile because it chronicles how my technical skills have evolved. It's become an old friend.

You can decide for yourself which projects you'd like to do entirely by hand, or entirely by machine, or in combination. I'm certain whatever you do will be beautiful:) Take a look at Sue Garman's blog. She does it all. Searching her past posts you'll get to see some great close-ups of both her hand applique quilts with hand quilting, and her hand applique quilts with machine quilting. Both treatments are extraordinary...they're just different! Anita Shackelford's book, A Modern Mix, also explores both techniques used in the same quilt.

Enjoy the adventure, Rebecca!
Jeanne
Jeanne Sullivanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15973407650278922508noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3069484008002726892.post-62811862149182591642013-08-14T19:32:07.168-07:002013-08-14T19:32:07.168-07:00Wow; truly inspirational workmanship. It's am...Wow; truly inspirational workmanship. It's amazing what the quilters of the past were able to create from such limited resources, but what YOU do with the fabrics and threads of today is positively miraculous! At first glance, I thought your design had been printed on the fabric; that's the level of realism you've achieved. I do have your book, but I'm working up to it. I'm knee deep in my first hand appliqué project right now and really enjoying it, and I have also been thinking ahead to the quilting lately so I'm glad to have found this post today.

So... Ummm... I don't know if it's okay to ask this here but, what do you think of combining machine quilting with hand appliqué? It's not that I'm afraid of hand quilting. I'm better at it than I am at machine quilting, but I've been trying to improve my machine quilting skills. I have done a LOT of ma hine quilting practice this year... But I do love the look of those even hand quilting stitches. I just don't want to be working on this same first appliqué quilt for the next 10 years! ;-)Rebecca Gracehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14801489818836195754noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3069484008002726892.post-80792457295027983642013-08-07T22:18:41.969-07:002013-08-07T22:18:41.969-07:00Thanks so much, Janice! I should have been more precise...for most, only white thread was available, so it was used for all of their applique and quilting, too. I belong to the Baltimore Applique Society and am one of the volunteers involved in a long-term quilt documentation project for the collection (over 400) owned by the Maryland Historical Society. I got to see an antique quilt which had been stitched with two weights of white thread; the thinner dedicated to the applique work and the heavier used for the quilting. Quite unusual. Thanks for writing!
